Chester the Pit Bull 02-25-10
Well, our little "shelter" is still open! Saturday afternoon I was driving west on 11th (a busy street in this little podunk town) when a large Pit Bull ran across the street with a puppy on its heels. The Pit Bull ran into a parking lot (Nellis Hall to those who know Coffeyville) and disappeared. The puppy was frightened and ran back across the busy street into a parking lot between Arby's and a Chinese restaurant. I had stopped my car and shuddered as I heard a fire engine with sirens blasting approaching. Luckily the puppy stayed where it was so after the fire engine passed, I made a u-turn and went in pursuit of the puppy. The little guy was hiding by a shrub and was so traumatized that I merely walked up to him, picked him up and placed him in my car. I always carry pet food (doesn't everyone?) so I offered him some but he wasn't interested. I took him home and Gena gave him a bath because he smelled of cow manure. He didn't seem to like dog food at all. We believe he was living on junk food because he had an upset stomach that revealed mucho garlic! So... I named him Chester (after my much-loved uncle) but we call him Chet. And now he loves his diet of good dog food.
Chet seems to have been taken care of in that he isn't covered in ticks, just a few fleas, and has no scars, runny eyes or nose, but he is under-weight. He only weighs 11 pounds. It does seem obvious that he was on his own, or with the Pit Bull, for awhile because of his desire for junk food. He's somewhat timid of new people but has warmed up to Gena and I very well.
Today I took him to the Vet. He is a Jack Russell mix, about 3 months young and now has had his shots, flea treatment and worm medicine. He is white with black ears and eye patches as well as a few large black patches on his body. He also has a small black oval on his head between his ears. He has long legs. Chet is a doll but really resists the idea of house training. We need to find him a good, loving home. Chet is precious and a cuddle-bug. He gets along well with our 3 dogs and 2 cats. Right now he sleeps in a dog crate in my room with Cody (my Siberian Husky) and I.
Let's see, this makes #10 on the rescued dog list. There was Cricket (a cute puppy of undetermined mix), Cody (my dog), Cheyenne (Gena's dog), Dewey (a Golden Retriever), Millie (a darling little herding dog), Chloe and Charlie (6-week-young pit bulls that someone dumped in the wooded area behind us), Barney the Blue-Tick Beagle, Peggie (our little Boston Terrier) and, now, Chet. Happily, they all have good homes. I sure wish people would spay their pets and take care of the ones they have. It's quite a challenge to find good homes for these little ones.
Anyone willing to give Chet a good home? He's a keeper.
